Gaby Rodriguez, a 17-year-old high school student in Toppenish, WA, faked a pregnancy for 6 months as a social experiment. Gabby experienced the backlash from many “mean girls” and peers at school and in the community. Her goal was to research the stereotypes and rumors associated with teen pregnancy, and she definitely did. People gossiped and were hateful, as imagined, despite Gaby being a straight-A student. Galia Slayen of Hamilton College built this “real life” sized Barbie for her schools National Eating Disorder Awareness Week (NEDAW). I would say this girl really got her message across. A Barbie built to human size would have the following measurements: about 6’ tall, 39″ bust, 18″ waist, and 33″ hips.

The “life-sized” Barbie was built using wood, nails, chicken wire, paper maché and a life size Barbie head from Toys R Us. Slayen made the Barbie as a visual to raise awareness about body image issues and eating disorders back in 2007. Since then, this figure has grabbed the attention of high school and college students, and now the media. Slayens story and efforts were featured in the Huffington Post and this image has been blogged on Tumblr by thousands of users. (more…)

Maybe things with your partner are slowing down, maybe your casual hook-up is losing interest or your long-term relationship has gotten boring. Okay, I really apologize, that title is a bit misleading. In all honesty though, that is the actual title of the new Smartwater advertisement starring Jennifer Aniston. The video is so perfect on so many levels. While being an actual marketing scheme, the video pokes fun at all the techniques used by advertisers on the reg.

Jen says, “This day in age I can’t just do that; I can’t just tell you that Smartwater is the smartest, best tasting water out there…” and she is absolutely right. A celebrity must be involved, or humor must be used, or a popular trend needs to be emphasized, or some sex appeal must be added to grab attention.

Today’s viral videos have become a huge success, and with the use of the young YouTube sensation in the introduction, the ad calls attention to that. Some green screening and animation are used to develop the scene with cute puppies, and then cute babies who begin to get raunchy (ew). I love when the nerdy producers/ad directors are gathered around Jen as she pours the Smartwater all over her sexy self. It’s about time people really make fun of the ridiculous use of sex to sell products.

I really love that this video spoofs the advertising industry and viral video craze in so many ways. Humor in marketing always grabs my attention, and if you can make me laugh, you’ve got me hooked. This video receives five out of five stars from me. Jennifer Aniston just gets hotter with age, and she made a hilarious debut in her first viral video ever. With over 8.5 million views already, I would have to say the viewers agree that this video was fabulous.

If you are up for the challenge, and you want some free pornography and pot, you could always get trapped in a mine in Chile for 69 days. I am sure you’ve heard about the 33 miners trapped 2,050 feet beneath rock back in August. The traumatic event really was no laughing matter, and the men survived a despite the lack of food, living space, and oxygen. Thankfully, all 33 men survived and were rescued by a steel capsule. They were medically treated and reunited with friends and family after the traumatic experience. Although the men are now seen as heroes by most, they are just like you and me.
