Anyone else find it mildly patronizing that a summit called the “Values Voter Summit” even exists? I’d just like to point out that its name alone implies a certain level of priggish self-righteousness often exhibited exclusively by “Dungeons & Dragons” paladins.

For those of you who don’t know about the Values Voter Summit, it’s a gathering which espouses the virtues of limiting government, reducing spending, championing traditional values and protecting America. Sound familiar? I’ll give you a few seconds to figure it out. Funny how the only ones invited to the “Values” summit are suspiciously all from the Republican Party. Am I, therefore, to assume that they are the only ones with a sense of values?

In a week where much of the focus will be (once again) on the economy’s ups and downs, I wanted to take things in a different direction. In search of some alternative topics, I came upon an editorial discussing the subject of same-sex marriage. Over the last month or so, there have been many articles debating whether homosexuals should be granted equal rights, all of which came to a head one month ago during the Oscars. Sean Penn brought up the issue during his acceptance speech after receiving the Best Actor award for his portrayal of Harvey Milk, the first openly gay politician in the US. As the debate continues to heat up, I would like to push for the support of same-sex marriage. (more…)

Barack Obama’s victory on Tuesday was cause for journalists to spew buoyant news stories evoking an egalitarian America. Juxtaposing the momentous occasion was news to the contrary.  Voters in four states approved ballots discriminate against same-sex couples-the most alarming being California’s Proposition 8, which effectively overturned Mays Supreme Court legalization of same-sex marriages in the state. While one barrier on the path towards civil liberties was shattered with Barack’s victory, Proposition 8 proved another stood firmly in lady liberty’s way.  The news on Nov. 5th felt like finding a hole in your favorite pair of shoes; still favorable, but damn the fucking hole!
