Reality television has consistently been a source of entertainment since its origin. These shows typically tell stories of love, camaraderie, competition or even antagonism. Shows like “American Idol,” “America’s Got Talent” and more recently “The Voice” and “X Factor,”  have made it their job to seek out and promote new musical talent. But, recently, other reality television shows have made it their job to assist their viewers in musical discovery.

“The Real World,” a veteran in the reality TV world, has picked up a new archetype in their casting. Normally, the “Real World” casting goes like this: a gay guy, a Black guy, a slutty girl, and an athletic guy with a few other characters mixed in. In recent seasons, however, the show has chosen at least one musically adroit member to participate in the show and these cast members have taken full advantage of the exposure that they have received. A few of the musically gifted recruits include Sahar from “Real World: New Orleans” as well as Josh and Erika from “Real World: D.C.”
