The Germans are known for many things. Having political parties with offbeat names is not one that comes to mind. On, Sept. 18, the Pirate Party Germany won all 15 seats it had nominated candidates for in the city-state parliament of Berlin.

Even more surprising to me is that these candidates are all in their 20s and 30s, and some had donned HOODIES, COMIC BOOK TEES and JEANS–among other casual wear–during the election. I’m sorry, when did a German parliament, much less any other parliament, give the okay for that? Don’t get me wrong, I think it’s kind of awesome…no, extremely awesome.

They received 8.9 percent of the vote for which they only needed 5 percent to get elected, and their platform is a single-issue stance for Internet freedom. I mean, damn. Just damn. That is impressive. I’m still amazed that it even happened. Hell, I think they are too. Despite their less-than-formal name, they are definitely a party to watch.
