Last Wednesday, there was an oil spill in New Zealand. Yup, another one. So far, populations of penguins, whales, seals and seabirds seem to be in the gravest danger. Well this time, there may be a way to enfeeble the ecological damage. Apparently, penguins can avoid being poisoned with the help of sweaters. That’s right, sweaters for penguins.
Grist, an independent green news site put out a call for people to knit sweaters for penguins affected by the oil spill. Knitwear can help penguins survive longer until they are properly cleaned up, therefore giving workers more time to reach them. There has been an overwhelming response from the knitters of the world, who have managed to fully meet the demand of sweaters.
Let’s all be grateful for these knitters and for this discovery because penguins are incredibly dear to us Animal Planet lovers. And if you saw “Happy Feet,” you should be breathing a sigh of relief too.
