Lupe Fiasco dropped his newest album, Lasers on March 8th. It’s a testimony of thoughtful raps and catchy beats. The album features production by the Neptunes, Needlz, Alex da Kid, Syience and collaborations with John Legend, Trey Songz, Eric Turner and Sarah Green. It has been stirring some controversy though, because of the content revealed in the music. Lupe talks politics: racism, slavery, and America’s lies.

Lupe had been working on the album between 2009 and 2010, and although it’s been done for some time now, his record label, Atlantic, held it back from release, possibly because of all its controversy.

Lupe had initially considered releasing a triple album titled LupE.N.D. and then retiring from music. But Atlantic prevented him from doing so.

One of the songs on the album titled “Words I Never Said,” leaps right into Lupe accusing the government for the attacks on 9/11. He calls the War on Terror “some bull shit,” and outright claims that Rush Limbaugh and Glenn Beck are racists. The track features Skylar Grey, the voice on Fort Minor’s “Where’d You Go” and Diddy Dirty Money’s “Coming Home.”

With Grey’s assistance, the song sounds beautiful, but the lyrics might be shocking to innocent ears.

Give me some feedback! What do you think about this song or Lupe’s new album in general? Does revealing this type of information make you think critically about the government, or do you think what Lupe is just rapping “some bullshit?”
