Unexpected Potpourri

A bunch of drunken jerks and some employees stood in line for one of the fifteen porta-potties that sat neighboring one another at Syracuse University’s Juice Jam event. I stood among these jerks, frustrated that it wasn’t okay that I pee in the woods. I was nervous to enter into a mess of feces and stench – as I would most likely feel ready for a shower immediately afterwards.

Awaiting terror, I was shocked by the flowery scent that leaked out as I opened the plastic green door to step into the luxurious toilet box. Without a doubt, these were the nicest of porta-potties I had ever used at any triathlon or outdoor event.

Potpourri hung from a tack on one of the green, plastic walls in an orange sack that went well with the Syracuse paraphernalia that hung directly above the seat. Fake flowers of blue and orange in the upper left corner and a soft carpet on the ground to console my filthy feet. Hand sanitizer, paper towels, obvious toilet paper was guaranteed.

These may have been some of the nicest bathrooms on campus but only for a short while because in no time drunken jerks were rushing over to use it for other reasons, while employees watched the shift from luxury to mess. Now it only makes sense as to why they chose to hang such a flowery scent.

On this week’s JERKcast, Lakota, Julia, and Charlie give the low down on Juice Jam, Westcott, and other happenings in the SU area. You can stream the show from jerkmagazine.net or download it directly here!

The cast gives their brutally honest opinions about the performers, the dancing hotdog, all the neon, and the hype behind Juice Jam. Apparently the floral scented, carpeted bathrooms were even a hit for Charlie. After wrapping up their thoughts on Sunday’s event, the crew gives you the rundown on Westcott – where to go, what to order, and what’s going on. Westcott wasn’t the only destination, a quick tangent on Shoppingtown Mall and Mother’s Cupboard reveals how some of the cast likes to ruin everything.

One surprise of my senior year has been all the exciting events happening on campus and in the city of Syracuse. Let me tell you, I know I’m having an awesome time my senior year so far, and I’m sure the rest of you guys are too.

It started with Day Glow, then Juice JamCuse Crawl and Tiesto followed; next month Skrillex will be coming to town as well. It seems house/trance music is finally having its moment here in Syracuse, and I am definitely lucky and thrilled that I am able to enjoy such moments here in my last year.

In addition to all the parties, the fact that I am part of the Jerk blogging team this year, as well as writing for College Fashionista, has given me a chance to look back on my college career and be grateful that I am actively part of SU. My previous years only consisted of volunteering and joining a couple clubs, but I never really took genuine interest in them.

I just want to say it’s not too late for us seniors to join a club or activity, especially if it’s for something you really love and care about. Make sure to take advantage of this school’s resources while you can, before we graduate, and before it becomes too late.

Think Lady Gaga has history?  According  to Billboard, “When Stefani ‘Lady Gaga’ Germanotta was an 18-year-old New York University sophomore, DJ Tiesto was DJ’ing at the opening ceremony of the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens.”

DJ Tiesto will join the lineup of techno DJ’s hitting the Syracuse area this tonight at the Oncenter.  DJ Chuckie headlined Dayglow at the Oncenter earlier this month on September 2nd, and Avicii opened for B.o.B on September 11th at Juice Jam.

Tiesto is a world renowned DJ who has had a name for himself for quite some time.  This specific tour, though, is something new to him.  For the first time Tiesto is reaching out to conquer the minds of college students on his Club Life Campus Invasion Tour.  Tiesto is even on the cover of Billboard Magazine this month.

His worldwide manager, Michael Cohen of Complete Control, commented on this upcoming tour in the magazine saying,  “College kids are really discovering this much and scene for the first time, and they need a test of the Tiesto experience.  It’s almost a rite of passage.”

So frolic to American Apparel and buy all the neon you can, seek out your best friend Molly, and risk your life for a night you will never forget (or maybe never even remember it existed).  Here is one of Tiesto’s better known songs, “Escape Me.”
