Mind the Gap are anything but your typical alternative rock band. Alex Yang, Ruwanga Samath, Ozzy Doniz and Greg Cahn are taking the states by storm with their innovative sound. The diversity of the band’s composition brings musical versatility to the forefront. The group blends smooth vocals and melodic acoustics with futuristic synthpop that keeps the listener guessing from track to track.

The unique qualities of each song are engaging and command the audience’s full attention. The band recently released their debut album “The Good Fight,” and have begun to receive widespread recognition. In celebration of the band’s recent nomination for the 2012 All Indie Music Awards, JERK caught up with band members Greg and Alex to further delve into the complexities of their music.

Midterms are finally over! And just in time to get completely shitfaced for Halloween. (Because we all know you’re thinking it.) But, don’t let that be the only form of celebration you give yourself after studying your ass off for the first big tests of the year (that is assuming you studied…).

Try treating yourself to some Chipotle or Pastabilities, get mani/pedi at Garbo’s, or how about just allow yourself to get a full night’s sleep–or, sleeping through that class you just took a midterm for–for some alternative ways of celebrating.

Now that the first quarter of the semester is over, here is a checklist you must have completed to ensure full success at the end of your semester:

Fall is in the air, and the Syracuse weather is starting to take its true shape, the leaves are changing, and a few pairs of UGGs have been spotted. The new season can only mean one thing: Halloween is almost here and so are our favorite Halloween movies and TV specials. ABC Family kicked off its annual “13 Nights of Halloween” this week, beginning with a special Halloween-themed episode of “Pretty Little Liars.”

Not my personal favorite way to start it off; I would have had the first movie be “Hocus Pocus.” That is truly a Halloween film classic. Then, there’s also Disney Channel’s original “Halloweentown” and Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen’s “Double, Double, Toil, and Trouble.” Even though those last two movies we not chosen for this year’s lineup, “Hocus Pocus” will be aired on Saturday, October 29 at 8 p.m.

Here is the entire “13 Nights of Halloween” schedule: (more…)

Halloween is coming! Soon, we will turn our attention to slutty nurse costumes, the Monster Mash, and stomach-sickening levels of candy corn. But for now, let’s talk about smashing pumpkins. (Not the band, not the act of destruction, but the British adjective).

A cup of pumpkin only has 30 calories, and is loaded with vitamins. That Jack-o’-Lantern of yours even has a bit-o’-fiber and antioxidants!

I know what you’re thinking. Pumpkins are meant for clobbering, carving, or pie filling. But there is so much more you can (and should!) do to pumpkins in the kitchen — and don’t you dare throw out those precious seeds.
