If you’re like me, you have no sense of direction in the kitchen and everything you make or bake turns out black and crispy. Since I moved into my off campus house with five other roommates, I have become the odd ball out in cooking a decent edible meal.

While I aimlessly waste time on the Internet avoiding my mounds of homework, I came across Cookie + Kate and couldn’t contain the drool rolling down my chin. For all of you incapable cookers out there, all of these recipes are simple, inexpensive and don’t require a lot of your time. Don’t believe me? I have now cooked seven of these recipes and didn’t set the fire alarm once!

Cookie + Kate is a food blog started by a woman named Kate (shocker) and her adopted dog (you guessed it) Cookie. Together, with Cookie sitting by Kate’s side, they cook vegetarian and whole food recipes for all of us to try ourselves. Not only do I find Cookie + Kate amazing but Saveur Magazine agreed after they nominated their blog as the #1 blog in 2012. This is the real deal guys and gals.

If you are as enthusiastic as I was about this blog, you will find yourself cooking up some delicious dishes in no time! Best of luck my new little chefs.

After a fun, crazy night at my house over the weekend, it came down to the worst part of the great night: cleaning up. Honestly, I’m not the most clean person to begin with, but I still hate it when I see spilled drinks all over my floor and table. That’s when I took out the big black plastic bag to put away all the used red cups, empty bottles, and even the leftover alcohol away on the counter.

It made me think how I missed my dorm days, back when I didn’t have so much of the urge to really “clean.” So what I’ve thought about to write for this week’s post is another list of advantages and disadvantages, this time about living in dorms versus living off-campus.

I’m in a cheese coma. And butter. And chocolate. And I may have severely compromised my complexion. And my figure. But it’s all in the name of discovery, of science, even. And I have discovered that you can make almost anything more delicious when reinterpreted as a grilled cheese sandwich.

I was surfing around on epicurious.com, looking for something for my first cooking blog entry. Something meaningful, and shocking, and attention-grabbing. Something that would pull people in. I am, after all, walking in similar shoes as Julie Powell, foraying into the unknown through a culinary wormhole in my tiny South Campus kitchen. But then I saw a recipe for “Fried Bittersweet Chocolate Bread” and all my cares went out the window.

“Fried Bittersweet Chocolate Bread” is an extremely simple and absolutely beautiful recipe. It’s a sandwich of chocolate cooked in a pan with butter until golden brown. And I wondered, “What else could I put between slabs of bread and fry in butter?”

Yummy ingredients for a yummy recipe, thanks to P&C.

A world of possibilities opened in my head, and I threw on my coat and hoofed it to P&C.

I came back an hour later, laden with Italian bread, mozzarella, brie, pepperoni, Hershey’s bars, and Reese’s cups. My kitchen was already stocked with bacon, raspberry jam, peanut butter, Colby jack cheese, apples, and, most important of all: butter.

I got to assembling, season three of The Office playing on Netflix in the background. I ended up with six creations. Brie and apple, mozzarella and pepperoni, Colby jack, bacon and brie, peanut butter and jelly, hershey’s chocolate, and reese’s peanut butter cup. (more…)
