Coffee. The word alone can perk up the drowsiest of college students, but this deliciously addictive pick-me-up’s resume lists more than just keeping you awake during that boring lecture. For those of you who add an extra 20 minutes to your walk to campus just so you can get your tall, nonfat latte, coffee has been making quite a name for itself in the news recently.

In September alone, coffee has been found not only to decrease regular drinkers’ risks of developing skin cancer, but also to cut the risk of depression in women, and reduce the risk of potential strokes. Sounds like a pretty good deal, right? Well, the good news doesn’t stop there.  According to an article in the Wall Street Journal, coffee has plenty of other health benefits, including decreased risks for: type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and types of dementia.

It took officials six years to catch these thieves. Ronald Mancuso and Sean McGuigan, two Syracuse natives, stole $2.9 million from the city of Syracuse. Instead of simply breaking into a bank, taking the money and bailing, it took these two a little longer to fill their piggy banks. Collecting their loot during the late hours of the night, Mancuso and McGuigan smashed parking meters and collected the coins. Now fighting a lawsuit by the city, Jerk wonders what these two guys were planning on using the money for. Here are a couple ideas we came up with, if we had $2.9 million burning in our pockets:

“Can you put extra sugar in my coffee?” “Sure, do you want me to take my top off too?”

Excuse me, what?! Sound a little ridiculous to you? Well, in Everett, Washington this isn’t such a stretch of the imagination.

Grab and Go Bikini Hut is a coffee stand where the employees are women that serve coffee to customers while wearing bikinis. There have been reports (over 40 complaints in the last year) that these women not only make coffee, but also charge people who want to look at and touch them.

A two month undercover police investigation found that the women were even seen “licking whipped cream off of each other and posed naked for pictures at the Grab and Go.” Last Wednesday, five of the girls were arrested for prostitution. (more…)

Kind Coffee – Restaurant Reviews

Sorry Starbucks. Like an old friend, you’ll do for a date in a pinch, but you just don’t have that special something like you used to. And Freedom of Espresso? We had our little fling. It was good, but you just weren’t dangerous enough.

Kind Coffee came into my life at the precise time my coffee snobbery had begun to escalate. Recess and Co-op beans had carried me through my post-Starbucks slump with dignity, but after a while they just couldn’t meet the Pacific Northwest’s cult of the bean standard. Now I’m a real nerd and I roast my own,  but in that precious window before my roaster and I were united in holy matrimony, Fayette Street’s Kind Coffee was the little shop that had my heart.

As you’ll see in the video, Kind’s proprietor Doug Nicolaisen roasts, brews, and serves what he calls the best cup of coffee in Syracuse. Since 1996, Nicolaisen has operated his small business at 715 W. Fayette St., catering to morning commuters on their way downtown for work. Over the years he’s developed quite a following.
