Lack of minority representation in the media is no secret at this point. It has been a serious issue for decades, but CNN has somehow managed to be at the forefront of diverse programming over the years. That is, until now. Following their coverage of the 2008 presidential campaign, the network has seen its minority demographic, specifically African-American and Hispanic viewers, flock to competitor MSNBC seemingly in droves.

There is no doubt in my mind that this dramatic decrease in minority viewership has everything to do with former CNN anchors, Lou Dobbs and Glenn Beck, and current anchor Jack Cafferty whose racist, nationalist undertones continuously marginalize minority viewers. Now that two of these anchors are gone, the network is desperate to win back their minority demographic in time for next year’s election. (more…)

Ever watched an episode of Jersey Shore? We all have, don’t deny it. Well, you have just joined Anderson Cooper’s exclusive Ridiculist Club. Last week during a broadcast of AC360°, Cooper went on a rampage against anyone and everyone who has ever paid Snooki to do anything. That includes breathing.

Two weeks ago it was announced that the entire cast of Jersey Shore would now be paid $100,000 per episode. According to Cooper, we are all at fault for this deplorable fact. “If you listen closely, you can hear school teachers around the country weeping right now,” he laments. Shame on us!

While I’m not quite ready to take the blame for Snooki’s pay raise, I am willing to bear some of the brunt for the stupidity of my state (yes, I’m a Jersey girl). It recently came to light that Rutgers, New Jersey’s largest university, will be paying Snooki a whopping $32,000 to speak about the struggles of keeping up the GTL lifestyle, presumably.

Now, universities pay celebrities big bucks to come speak at their schools all the time, so what makes this story such a big deal? Well, the problem here is that Rutgers is also paying Nobel Laureate Toni Morrison to speak at their Commencement in May. However, they are paying her $2000 less than the amount Snooki is receiving.

Cooper rightfully launched an attack against Rutgers in response to this inexcusable insult against Morrison, comparing a quote from The Bluest Eye to a quote from Snooki’s book—if that what’s they’re calling it—A Shore Thing. It’s one thing for youth culture to put Snooki on a pedestal, but it’s an entirely different thing for an institute of higher education to do the same. That is an unforgivably damning message to send to students: one of utter defeat.

On Thursday night, the CNN daytime anchor made an appearance on comedian Pete Dominick’s satellite radio show to discuss his new book Conventional Idiocy. As the discussion turned toward race, Sanchez made one of the most ridiculous comments I have ever heard.

Sanchez, who is Cuban-American, made the argument that as a minority in the media industry, he is viewed by “a lot of elite Northeast establishment liberals” as someone “who belongs in the second tier and not the top tier.” He then went off on one of the worst tangents in the history of the English language equating Jon Stewart to one of those aforementioned establishment liberals.

During Sanchez’s attack on The Daily Show host, he referred to Stewart as a bigot who is “prejudicial against anybody who doesn’t agree with his point of view, which is very much a white liberal establishment point of view.”

But he didn’t stop there. When Dominick attempted to defend Stewart, saying that because Stewart is Jewish he is as much a minority as Sanchez is, Sanchez smugly laughed. “Everybody that runs CNN is a lot like Stewart,” he said. “And a lot of people who run all the other networks are a lot like Stewart. And to imply that somehow they – the people in this country who are Jewish – are an oppressed minority? Yeah.”

The next day, Sanchez did not appear on air. Hours later CNN released the statement, “Rick Sanchez is no longer with the company. We thank Rick for his years of service and we wish him well.” I say ‘good riddance’ to this dumbass. If you’ve ever watched Sanchez’s show, you know very well CNN is most definitely not losing out in this decision.
