Since the release of the teaser trailer for “The Dark Knight Rises,” the long-awaited sequel to “The Dark Knight,” there has been little news on the film. Aside from photos snapped by both paparazzi and nosey fans as well as the odd rumor, it’s been fairly quiet on “TDKR” front. However, a bombshell has just been dropped which will leave fans salivating for the film’s July 20 release date.

In an interview with Empire magazine, “TDKR” director Christopher Nolan made two stunning revelations. The first is there will be a prologue to the film! For some, this may come as a bit of a surprise, but for the more devoted fans, this is actually fairly expected. Rewind to the release of “TDK” and you might remember that the opening bank robbery scene of the film was pre-screened in IMAX attached to “I Am Legend.”

Back then, it was our first look at Heath Ledger’s Oscar-winning portrayal of The Joker. Now, Chris Nolan has confirmed that on December 21, fans will get their first look at Tom Hardy’s portrayal of Batman’s latest villain, Bane, in the film’s opening sequence. It will be playing in select IMAX theaters.

Okay, so the title above is a little misleading.  The Pittsburgh Steelers are not entering the comic book world of Batman in order to face off against Gotham City’s football team.  However, reports say that Ben Roethlisberger and the gang will be starring in The Dark Knight Rises as extras.  The Steelers will take on the persona of a football team called the Gotham Rogues.

At first glance, this may seem like a lame attempt to add a few more stars to the cast.  However, this is not the case.  Apparently, Ben Rothlisberger is friends with Thomas Tull, who runs Legendary Pictures.  And who is producing The Dark Knight Rises?  Legendary Pictures!

Personally, I think this is a really interesting networking connection and a good call by Tull.  If you want to get a football team together for a feature length movie, why train a bunch of guys last minute when you can call up your friend that plays for an NFL team?  I guess it’s like the saying goes:  It’s not just what you know, it’s who you know.

In the world of “Batman: Arkham Asylum,” gamers were introduced to a very dark Batman similar to that of “The Dark Knight.”  However in other series, Batman was unable to go very far without Robin, the Boy Wonder.  With Arkham Asylum’s sequel, “Batman: Arkham City,” just a few months away, the producers have released this concept art for Robin.  I must say, he’s completely badass.  Robin has a revamped, darker look and I love it.

While this is a far stretch from the childish Robin some of us knew in “Batman: The Animated Series,” I think it’s for the best.  Between the recent movies and video games, Batman and the world around him have become much darker.  It’s only fair that Robin follows suit with a new look and persona.  Considering how much I loved “Batman: Arkham Asylum,” I can’t wait to pick up “Arkham City” on October 18.  Let’s just hope Robin’s character lives up to this concept art.

Here’s a shocker…writers make mistakes, or in this case, unintentional faux pas. Considering the 70 year history of Batman, something like this panel doesn’t seem too out of line given the thousands of words that have been written on the Dark Knight.

Having a sidekick means you’re going to come into physical contact with him (or her), but within the context of every other superhero in the scene being concerned over a women, this comes across as curiously homoerotic.

File this under unintentionally hilarious.
