Designer Spotlight: Joseph Altuzarra

For fashion designers trying to break through the glass ceiling winning the CFDA/Vogue fashion fund is one of the most important steps towards making it.  Last year Joseph Altuzarra was granted this once in a lifetime opportunity.  He received thousands of dollars to continue developing his designs and most importantly a mentor.  Altuzarra chose to work with President and CEO of Calvin Klein—Tom Murray.

The French designer’s clothes are usually very high end and cutting edge.  The American-based French designer has a clean contemporary perspective.  J.Crew recently started selling a small collection of clothes by Altuzarra.  What is the French version of American preppy? Well, Altuzarra answers this question with denim pencil skirt, gingham blouses, white high-rise wide-leg trousers, and stripped sweaters.

Altuzarra’s seven pieces for J.Crew meet perfectly in the middle of high-end French sex appeal and classic preppy American.  The deal with J.Crew is huge especially since this Altuzarra has such little formal training.  He studied art history in college before interning with Marc Jacobs in New York and Givenchy in Paris.

Prospects for Altuzarra are promising.  Especially since many winners of the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund have gone on to be wildly successful.  Past winners such as Rodarte, Rag and Bone, Thakoon, Alexander Wang, and of course the first winner Proenza Schouler are now staples in the fashion world.
