The Met Gala: Like the Oscars With a Little Bit of Crazy

If you haven’t heard of the Met Gala, think of it as Lady Gaga’s version of the Oscars – all the red carpet glam with a little bit of crazy.

Last years opening displayed an emotionally charged Alexander McQueen retrospective exhibit.  This year the show’s subject is the Impossible Conversions: Elsa Schiaparelli and Miuccia Prada.  Although much less a showy performance than Alexander McQueen—Schiap and Prada have their own magical presence in fashion.  The two Italian women looked at fashion through an artistic lens and challenged perceptions of what women are suppose to wear.

The main difference between a fashion industry event and a typical awards ceremony or movie premiere is the level of outrageousness.  And honestly when Anna Wintour—the essence of understated chic—decides to wear a gown with a huge gold lobster embroidered skirt, you can be sure the fashion is something to watch.  Here are my top five celebrity fashion picks from the night:

1. Marc Jacobs wore a Comme de Garcons black sheer lace dress.  Yep, you read that right.  A man showed up to the Met Gala in a see-through lace dress.  Clearly visible were his white boxers underneath (thank god).  Lately it looks like this is just the way Marc Jacobs rolls, he showed up to at least two of his shows this year wearing dresses.  When reporters ask why, he simply just says it’s comfortable.  Well, I can’t argue with that.

2. Beyonce strutted her stuff in a stunning Givenchy Couture gown.  This event was Beyonce way of returning to the spotlight.  A purple feathery train flowed from a tight nude and black lace bodice.  Many of the celebrities chose outfits that were either focused on the waist down aesthetic of Prada or the waist-up style of Schiap.  Beyonce said to the Guardian that, “the waist down … is about sex. It’s about life. It’s about giving birth … more connected to the earth.”

3. Christina Ricci in Thakoon looked fabulously elegant… and kind of remined me of a fortune cookie.  Her nude dress with an avant garde single shoulder strap and black embroidery on the body makes the perfect statement.  It goes without saying that this dress is all about the presentation, and trust me a picture does no justice.  This dress is meant to be seen 360, where the full effect of the beautiful train and craft can be truly seen.

4. Lana Del Ray chose a beautifully vampire-esque elegant gown and cape by Joseph Altuzzara.  One of my least favorite celebrities wearing my one of my favorite designers.  Vogue and Mulberry has declared her a fashion icon, so the pressure was on during the Met Gala.  Which was her first event since her newly awarded title of fashion icon.  LDR’s dress wasn’t overly extravagant, it worked because Alturzarra is one of the hottest rising designers and the floor length cape was a subtle nod to Schiap.

5. However, the best is for last, and it happens to be Rihanna.  Arriving late, just moments after the red carpet closed, she appeared in a skin tight Tom Ford gown.  Her black alligator skin patterened dress was completed with intense claw-like fingernails to match.  One of the more understated dresses of the night, her look definitely passed the ‘holy shit’ test.  I’d snatch up that dress in a second
