Spending the summer in Syracuse to do an internship or catch up on some credits? Although the prospect of staying on campus during the summer months can seem bleak (especially if you’re planning on living in a non air conditioned residence hall for the duration of the summer – you’ll melt), there’s plenty to do around Syracuse despite the lack of student populating campus (and it will be such perfect weather for quad sitting, too!). Especially downtown – the Civic Center Theaters, part of the OnCenter, have lots of theatrical entertainment to keep you busy on those hot and humid nights.
Starting in May, there is a short run of the Mel Brooks musical “Young Frankenstein”, from May 15-May 17 (in a city like Syracuse, you can’t expect these tours to stay too long – they’ve got bigger fish to fry, so to speak.) In June, wander over to the War Memorial Arena for a taste of the acrobatic: Cirque du Soleil: Dralion, from June 6 to June 10. In July, comedian Jim Gaffigan is stopping in Syracuse for a night of his America Tour.
For those of you lucky enough to be equipped with a car, take a day trip out to Buffalo or Rochester to see what their theater scene has to offer – like Memphis at Buffalo’s Shea’s Performing Arts Center in early June, or South Pacific at Rochester’s Auditorium Theatre in May. And of course, for those of you really willing to go big, remember that the real thing is just a five hour bus ride away!
