Face Recongizing Billboard

Posted: March 7, 2012 by jerkmag in SURF -- tech

The latest in advertising technology: a billboard which recognizes your gender and plays custom advertisements. The billboard uses HD cameras to scan your face and recognize your gender, apparently, with a 90% success rate (you would hope). The billboard’s main message is to portray the lives of girls living in developing countries, and to show how they don’t have the power to make their own decisions. Once the cameras see you, the billboard begins to plan an ad; if you’re a girl that is. The main idea is that women get to see the ad, while the men see only a glimpse of it before it cuts to black. By cutting the video right as it starts, it is supposed to show men how it would feel like not to be able to make your own decisions…

The idea behind both the advertisement and the charity has the greatest of intensions and definitely attracts attention and creates awareness. The technology is eye catching and has great potential. In fact, Plan UK  probably could have come up with a better advertising idea once it detected the gender of the viewer, rather than simply playing or stopping a video. The possibilities of such a technology are amazing. Imagine walking into a store and having a customized greeting as a digital sales person recognizes you from your past shopping ventures and then recommends their latest trends based on your previous purchases. We are one step closer to the Minority Report.
