OSCAR TRENDS

Closing out an amazing awards season the Oscars definitely saw a fierce choice of fashion.  Of course the elegant strapless look was one of the most popular.  Cameron Diaz wore a strapless nude Gucci dress.  The gown is a showstopper with cascading ruffles and gold beading to match.  Many others such as Viola Davis, Natalie Portman, Michelle Williams, Kristin Wiig, and Tina Fey dressed in beautiful strapless styles.

However, there is no doubt that Gwyneth Paltrow stole the spotlight.  All eyes waiting to get a glimpse of the actress’s Tom Ford dress.  She wore a cleanly draped white gown with a structured white cape.  Capes have been all over the runway this season, so its not surprising that Paltrow chose this bold look.  The silhouette is somewhat masculine but Paltrow always pulls it off.  Paltrow has rocked several suits before at various movie premieres and the male inspired look is definitely one that works for her.

Another popular style at the Oscars? Sleeves.  In the past sleeves at the Oscars were usually reserved for the older actresses.  But this year everyone from Anna Faris, wearing DVF, to Jennifer Lopez, wearing Zuhair Murad, selected sleeves.  For the most part this style can be sexy, but you have to be careful.  Shailene Woodley came out in a gorgeous white Valentino dress.  However, on the 20 year old star the tight neckline and bulky sleeves made her look more matronly than youthful.  Even though the dress was beautiful, the design nearly doubled her age.

Shailene wasn’t the only one with a fashion falter.  Jane Seymour walked out in a red sequin deep v-neck dress with stripes.  It did nothing for her figure and was too gaudy—especially for the Oscars.  Surprisingly Melissa McCarthy was called out as being one of the worst dressed.  All season long she had been wearing dark dramatic colors in flattering styles.  But at the Oscars her peach Marina Rinaldi gown clashed completely with her skin tone making her look washed out.  Hands down, the worst dressed was Busy Phillipps.  The lace dress, which looked like a tablecloth, paired with turquoise chandelier earrings and fuchsia heels did not work in her favor at all.

As for hair, the side swept Marylin Monroe look was very popular.  We saw it on so many celebrities like Penelope Cruz and Cameron Diaz.  But most loved was Stacy Keibler, George Clooney’s girlfriend.  Soft elegant curls paired with a stunning gold Marchesa gown earned Keibler one of the best dressed at the Oscars.
