A Trip to Winn-Dixie

Lately, there have been more and more animals hitting the Broadway stage. Horses were prominent in Equus (yes, the play where Daniel Radcliffe was naked and in love with horses), and War Horse (which has recently gained heightened fame to the film adaption’s award show success). There’s been more buzz and furry stars gracing the stage than usual.

Now, a beloved book, featuring a dog, is getting its chance on the Broadway stage. Because of Winn-Dixie, the book that you couldn’t escape from reading in a mid 2000’s fifth grade classroom, has recently been given the green light for a developmental lab this spring.

Spring Awakening’s Duncan Sheik and Legally Blonde’s Nell Benjamin are scoring the show. Going to be an interesting change of plots for Sheik, who is going from scoring a show that covers adolescent suicide, depression and back-alley botched abortions to one about a young girl and her pet dog. For Benjamin, the campiness of Legally Blonde will surely help him in making equally happy music for Winn-Dixie.

Because of Winn-Dixie tells the story of a young girl whose father uproots her family to a small town in Florida. The girl finds a stray dog outside of a Winn-Dixie store (the Florida Wegman’s), and takes him under her wing.

Taran, an Irish Wolfhound, will be playing Winn-Dixie, under the direction of famed animal trainer Bill Berloni (who has won Tony’s for his abilities). Broadway veteran John Tartaglia will direct the show.
