Top 5 Spots for Freshmen

Life as a freshman can get lonely at times; you’re still in the process of making new friends as you slowly realize that some of the people you’ve been required to hang out with thus far (roommates, floor mates, people in class, etc.) are beginning to annoy the shit out of you.

For those in need of a nice place to study, make some new friends (possibly someone you’ve wanted to talk to but never had the opportunity to do so without it being awkward) and/or flee the “friends” you’ve made, check out these five spots. Who knows, maybe you’ll even run into me!

  1. Starbucks — Who in their right mind would ever complain about the smell of a pumpkin spice latte or the relaxing music at this almost always warm and pleasant hub? Even though it tends to be pretty busy throughout the day, I’ve always been able to find a seat and peacefully do homework. And, there’s a good chance you’ll run into someone familiar. Not to mention, it beats Bird when you’re looking to do some not-so-serious studying. Side note: Try their breakfast sandwiches.
  2. Pages — Bottom line, there is semi-good food here–I prefer the southwest chicken sandwich–and comfortable chairs. The chances you’ll run into someone are extremely high, and this is a good place to just hang around in case you’re feeling like your lagging on doing work. Just saying “I was in the library today” will make you feel better about procrastinating, trust me. Plus, it’s better than sitting under the fluorescent lighting in the rest of the library, and it’s a good area for group projects, watching TV and people watching.
  3. Panasci Lounge (otherwise known as that room on the top floor of Schine) — There’s a fireplace and you can sleep there. Enough said.
  4. People’s Place — You’ll need some cash for this one, but no need to bring more than $3! People’s Place is a happy medium between wanting a good cup of coffee and not willing to walk all the way to Starbucks (or hurting your wallet either). It’s located under Hendrick’s Chapel and has cheap coffee and snacks that are actually yummy. Also, their staff is pretty chill, so you can make friends with someone there by complimenting their sailor hat or asking what song is playing.
  5. The Quad — Get on it before it’s covered in snow. Sunday’s are usually a nice day to lounge on the grass and pretend that you like soccer or frisbee. So go play, you lazy fuck!
