Riding on the high of five Emmy wins,“Modern Family” premiered season three last week with a classic Pritchett-Dunphy family vacation. Everyone’s favorite family takes a trip to Wyoming to a dude ranch, which becomes the perfect place for Phil to show off his machoness and make us all laugh at the same time.

This episode centered around the idea of manliness. Mitchell complained about his for half the episode because he’s unsure if he is fit to raise a son. I think this line sums it up best: “I realized if I was gonna raise a boy, I was gonna have to butch up my life. I wanted to be able to teach all the things to my son that my dad taught…Claire.” Mitchell isn’t really ready for a son so in order to prove his manliness, he sets a birdhouse on fire with beloved pyromaniac Luke–the obvious scene-stealer.

There were lots of other shocking (I’m using that term loosely) moments at the dude ranch. Dylan proposed to Haley and not-so-shockingly was screamed at by Claire. Despite everything being resolved in the end, Haley is not walking down the aisle and Dylan is even staying in Wyoming. Haley wasn’t the only one with boy drama this episode; her little sister, Alex, was kissed for the first time. As happy as I was for Alex, that kid’s fake Jersey accent was so annoying I almost had to mute the TV. (Alex did seem to enjoy the kiss though.)

The most surprising aspect of the season premiere, though, had to be that Lily finally spoke. My question is how did she get like four years older over a single summer hiatus? Personally, I thought she was cuter when she didn’t talk, but I guess she couldn’t realistically stay a baby forever. All in all, if I had stars to give away, this would get four out of five. It was good, but not as funny as a season opener should be.

Best line of the episode: Phil, “Buffalo Phil… worth the wait.”
