Since the beginning of his career, Kanye has made it a point to showcase a discourse of style through his personal appearances and music videos. Since 2008, he has made one of the most legitimate celebrity entrances into the fashion arena.

The most common error celebrities commit when considering a design career is the desire for another hyphen (e.g. actor-singer-fashion designer). They propagate the misconception that fashion is not a career that demands study and a particular skill set, not an industry full of vapid shallow individuals.

Kanye’s first formal step was to intern at Fendi under the tutelage of Karl Lagerfeld, which is obviously not where most begin, but definitely an incredible opportunity. From there, began his collaborations with Marc Jacobs at Louis Vuitton. Eventually, he released his popular sneaker, the Air Yeezy.

Last year, when releasing his album “My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy” he called upon George Condo for the artwork and went on an aesthetically impressive promo tour making appearances in an array of on-trend designs (Celine, Jil Sander, Margiela, etc.). And most recently, for the release of his Jay-Z collaboration album “Watch The Throne,” they called upon Givenchy’s Riccardo Tisci.

In 2010, when rumors were flying around that West was creating a women’s Ready-To-Wear collection, he firmly shut them down noting, “Did you not see the Lindsay and Ungaro collection? That was 9/11 for celebrities doing fashion. After that I thought: ‘Well he can’t do a line now.’ However, this past week, West has officially secured a time slot for Paris Fashion Week.

Not sure if this is good or bad news considering his fashion experience has mostly been in footwear and accessories. To undertake a womenswear collection is a tremendous challenge and I am quite curious to see Kanye’s take on what women should be wearing (even though we got an idea through his transformation and styling of ex-girlfriend Amber Rose). Then again, I feel he should have picked another Fashion Week locale to present his first full collection.

London or New York are more experimental and fun, which is perfect when making an initial plunge into Fashion Week mania. However, Milan and especially Paris usually show extremely seasoned designers working for established houses. Even Zac Posen’s first foray into Paris FW was a bit rough. Then again, Kanye has received most of his fashion education in Paris and with established European designers. I am sure he is aware of the pressure and with the best possible counselors, everything should go smoothly.

I too am interested to see what this line will look like. Oh Kanye. As one comedian put it, “Kanye is almost as big as he thinks he is.” lol
Wish I could be at this premier but I’ll have to tell Kanye I’m a bit too busy and will probably be in the library.
