I think it’s safe to assume that all of us played our fair share of board games with our families when we were kids.  Whether it was “Monopoly,” “The Game of Life” or “Chutes and Ladders,” many of us grew up playing board games.  Well, one of my friends recently informed me of a yearly convention where people gather from around the world to not only play, but compete in board games. It’s an event known as the World Boardgaming Championships held in Lancaster, PA.

Let me be clear, the games I mentioned earlier are generally not played at this event.  Rather, games, such as “Dominion,” “Ingenious” and “Settlers of Catan,” are featured on the list of games to be played at this year’s WBC.  These games may not be relevant in popular culture, but at WBC these games actually attract a relatively large audience.

Despite the event being called a “championship,” WBC isn’t all about competition.  In fact, it’s mostly about having fun.  There are also introductory sessions and open play to familiarize new players.  The World Boardgaming Championships is a week-long series of events taking place from August 1-7 this year.  For a complete list of the games, visit the WBC website.
