The Preg-Not Hoax

Gaby Rodriguez, a 17-year-old high school student in Toppenish, WA, faked a pregnancy for 6 months as a social experiment. Gabby experienced the backlash from many “mean girls” and peers at school and in the community. Her goal was to research the stereotypes and rumors associated with teen pregnancy, and she definitely did. People gossiped and were hateful, as imagined, despite Gaby being a straight-A student. One quote Gaby overheard during her project: “Her attitude is changing, and it might be because of the baby, or she was always this annoying and I never realized it.”

Gaby hid the secret from everyone except her mother, boyfriend, best friend, and school principal. Now I don’t condone lying and telling your boyfriend’s parents that you’re expecting, but it was definitely an interesting experiment. Through her bravery, she learned plenty and she plans to present her work to the members of her community soon. I applaud Gaby Rodriguez for giving up her senior year to do this social study. Hey, she didn’t even go on Teen Mom!
