2012 may bring us the apocalypse, but it may also bring us a great new exhibition on the art of video games.  That’s right.  The Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. is planning an exhibition called “The Art of Video Games” for their American Art Museum.  Set to open on March 16, 2012, the exhibition will display the evolution of video games as an artistic medium over the past 40 years.  “The Art of Video Games” plans to focus on striking visual effects, creative technology, and influential video game designers.

The most interesting thing about this exhibition, however, is the planning of it.  This is because the Smithsonian Institution wants the opinions of the public!  At, users can make an account and vote on which video games they think are artistic in certain “eras” of gaming.  While the choices are somewhat limited, I think that (on the whole) they are very well thought out.  These choices branch from the likes of Pac-Man, to Mario, and even Call of Duty.  Even though I’ve already voted, I highly recommend that you also vote to get your opinion heard.
