Meredith Viera to Leave Today Show

Last year, the trend seemed to be news anchors getting sacked left and right for bad judgment calls. Fast forward to 2011 and it appears this is the year the future members of the media will refer to as the year the female news anchor became extinct.

Like clockwork, just two days after Katie Couric announced her departure from CBS’s Evening News, Meredith Vieira is now expected to leave NBC’s Today show when her contract expires in September. Another one bites the dust.

The report comes from a TV Guide article, which claims that Vieira’s decision to leave is attributed to the show’s early call time and her husband’s declining health. Ironically, Vieira left her chair at The View behind back in 2006 to become Couric’s replacement on the Today show.

Insiders say that Today and Dateline news anchor Ann Curry is the early frontrunner to take Vieira’s place as co-anchor of the show next to Matt Lauer. However, it might be wise of NBC to simply allow Lauer to anchor the news program independently.

As a former viewer of The Today Show, I can say without a shred of doubt that Curry is one of the worst interviewers in the business. Not only does she repeatedly ask the most banal questions, but she has also developed a habit of persistently cutting off her interviewees for useless interjections. Not a good look, NBC.
