The varsity/letterman jacket is a classic staple of American style. It is associated with football games, high schools and tradition. Those are the realms it has been confined to, until recently.
Originally, it was a marker of outstanding athletic achievement but has transcended into the fashion arena decades ago. Its close friend, the bomber jacket, designed for pilots in the late 1920s, has gone through a similar transition.
Fashion is cyclical, that is its only constant. All trends die and return; few things are new. Of all the designers to take the trend and reincorporate it into today’s wardrobe, Isabel Marant has probably done the best work. Then again, maybe my bias is too strong.
Marant is not a new designer, she is currently going through an “It” moment. All the cool girls, aka socialites and models, want to wear her designs. She has figured out what most girls in their twenties want to wear. As a French woman, her interpretation on a staple of classic Americana is effortless.
