Those of you who played video games in the 80s, or just like to go back and play video games from the 80s, should know Double Dragon. It’s the classic side-scrolling, beat ‘em up game that was an arcade hit back in the day. And now, more than 20 years later, Double Dragon has made its way to a smaller screen: the iPhone.
Released March 3, Double Dragon hit the iTunes app store for $3.99. The game is filled with revamped graphics, remixed music, new combat options and more. So are all these new features worth saving your quarters?
Even though I haven’t played the iPhone version, I’m going to guess the answer is no. I think that using the touch screen to repeatedly tap the attack “button” would be unresponsive and also a pain in the ass. In addition, Double Dragon wouldn’t have the multiplayer charm that it had in the arcades, despite being able to play with friends via Bluetooth. Part of the fun Double Dragon, and games like it, is playing with a friend. Let’s face it, Double Dragon wouldn’t be the same without a real person right next to you, especially when you have to (SPOILER ALERT!!!) fight your partner at the end to decide who gets the girl.
If you have an iPhone or iPod Touch and you’re curious about how this new version of Double Dragon plays, go ahead and buy it. But just so you know, I won’t be trying it any time soon. And whatever you do, never watch the Double Dragon movie. But that’s another story….
