Has anyone seen the new changes on Facebook? If you haven’t, go try and change your relationship status. There are two new categories for relationships on Facebook in an attempt to add more diversity or “gay friendliness” to the site. One category is “ in a domestic partnership” and the other is “in a civil union.” When Facebook started the only options for statuses were “single” or “in a relationship.” Over the years more categories such as  “its complicated” or “widowed” have been added as the age group and diversity level of users has shifted.

These new categories are only available in the US, UK, France and Canada.  (Ironic how the US is still one of the least gay friendly countries yet we have these new statuses, huh?) In addition to the new category options there have been other changes made on Facebook due to requests and in support of the gay teen suicides that have occurred this year on/or due to social media and other forms of bullying.  Now I am all for adding more categories and giving people more options but as someone who is gay I don’t forsee myself ever putting “in a civil union with” as my relationship status. “Hey guys did you see Marcy and Mary are finally in a “domestic partnership” on Facebook? Now it’s official!” It will be interesting to see what new Facebook statuses exist in a few years.
