It seems in our modern musical era, an artist’s longevity is ruled less by genuine talent and more by commercialized production. Artists are no longer relevant based on how many records they sell or even how many arenas they fill, but rather how many stops they can pull to remain on top. It’s fair to say, perhaps, that “relevancy” in the music industry no longer exists.

A sassy Brit with a swagger of her own, Adele makes her triumphant return with 21—a follow-up to 2008’s 19. Released in the UK on January 24, Adele’s 21 has soared to the top of the European charts, swiftly and surprisingly knocking commercial pop off the throne it has held for so long. She has held the #1 spot for three weeks running, and is expected to continue her reign in the weeks to come.

Adele’s success is no mistake—led by an obscenely talented pool of producers and collaborators, Adele has carefully chosen the tracks on 21 to send a special message to her fans and to the industry. Her songs are successful for everything they’re not. Listeners around the world embrace her genuine and soulful-chic style. The first single off the record—“Rolling in the Deep”—has shown fans what they can expect this time around from the most unlikely of pop sensations. With its gritty bass and soaring vocal lines, “Rolling in the Deep” has allowed Adele’s soft-spoken yet ultimately powerful prowess to challenge what consumers interpret as commercial pop music.

When 21 makes its US debut on February 22, it will undoubtedly contest the current state of American Top 40 radio just as it has with its European counterpart. US fans can expect to hear something very different pouring from their speakers—something that doesn’t mask itself behind a heart-throbbing beat and disjointed melodies. With the success of 21 comes the realization that soul—and I mean real soul—will never go out of style.

Tracks to watch out for:

“Rolling in the Deep”

“Someone Like You”

“Rumour Has It”
