Joseph Stein, “Fiddler,” and Jewish Puppets

You may have heard the sad news: Joseph Stein, the author of “Fiddler on the Roof,” passed away. He was 98-years-old and had a fulfilling career.

As a celebration of his work, I’d like to introduce you to one of the greatest YouTube videos of all time. Anyone who has seen (or is familiar with) both Avenue Q and Fiddler on the Roof has not truly lived until watching this.

(While this video may be a bit old, it will always be funny. Plus, it was taken off the web for a while, but hopefully it stays for good this time.)

More recently, Lin-Manuel Miranda (music, lyrics, original concept, and OBC Usnavi in “In the Heights”) did his own take on a Fiddler classic as a surprise for his wife on their wedding night.

Shalom and L’Chaim.

And thank you, Joseph Stein, for your contributions to the theatre world.
