Miss out on some awesome modern musicals, or can’t trek down to New York City just to see a show? You don’t have to. While there’s nothing like the flashy billboards and oblivious tourists on 42nd street, seeing national tours is a great way to experience a high quality awesome show, even in central New York.
– Take a break from seeing Rent at Syracuse Stage January 25 – 30, and ease your way into the new semester with the hip hop and Latin beats from In the Heights, which will be playing in Rochester. This is one of my favorite musicals, if you just go to see one show this semester, this should be the one.
– Thursday, March 31, if you can widdle your way out of class head over to Buffalo to see the Tony award winning rock musical set in nineteenth century Germany, Spring Awakening. The original cast featured Lea Michele and Jonathan Groff, Glee‘s Rachel Berry and Jesse St. James. It covers lots of taboo topics, and it’s definitely worth it; you won’t feel “Totally Fucked” for making the trip. Just watch out for some of the fans that follow the tour around the country…they can get Cuh-Ray-Zee.
– I may not be making the trek to Schenectady to see Hair during my last week of classes as a college student but only because I’ve already seen this show…a lot. If you’re a Hair virgin GO, GO, GO! It is a beautiful piece that I think everybody must see, and the cast is going to be killer. You really don’t want to miss this one.
