Gay Republicans…?!

Unlike bigfoot, the Yeti and the bogeyman, it turns out that there are, in fact, gay Republicans. Why haven’t these strange beasts been eradicated by the Bible Wielding, fire and brimstone religious right? Is this even possible?

In fact, yes.

At the recent Conservative Political Action Conference, there was a booth that was host to GOProud, a gay Republican group that combines the spirit of GOP and Gay Pride (the proud part of the group name). This group, although small, has rangled many right wingers. Although GOProud shares many of the same values as the GOP prides itself on (fiscal “responsibility”, smaller government and all that other bullshit), their social beliefs, rather more libertarian and free will oriented than their GOP counterparts. Especially seeing as they are actually, gay.

Several groups, included ones founded by right wing evangelists, included the late-great-Jesus Freak Jerry Falwell, have boycotted the event because of said group. What bothers me is this: if the GOP prides itself on freedom and prosperity for all Americans, then these guys should actually support the right to free expression that GOProud represents.

Again with the hyprocricy–what the fuck are these Republican clowns thinking? If they represent “rights and freedoms” then gay rights shouldn’t be a problem for them. Reports and studies show that for persons under 40, support for same sex unions is growing larger and larger each day.

The Christian beliefs on gay marriage may come back to haunt them, but Democrats need to watch out as well. As support for Obama’s fiscal policy and big government spending wanes, voters, especially socially liberal and libertarian voters, may view a Republican Party that supports gay rights as a healthy option. Despite opposition to GOProud, what really matters is the votes.

This is a critical time for gay rights activists. There is a chance that Democrats or Republicans could harness this growing trend towards acceptance of gay rights to revitalize either of their campaigns. Either way, one party will be fucked, and one won’t. We’ll see what happens.
