No Doubt performed at The Warped Tour and The Bamboozle music festivals.

In the spirit of top five lists, I’ve got another list this week…

TOP FIVE MUSIC FESTIVALS!

One slight problem: I have not attended enough festivals to have a “Top Five Festivals I Have Attended” list, so we’re going to have to settle for a “Top Five Festivals I Have Attended/Dream of Attending” list.

This list, once again, is in no apparent order.

1.Bonnaroo

Sadly, I’ve never been. The headliners this past year: Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, Phish, Beastie Boys and Nine Inch Nails. Bonnaroo seems like one of those types of festivals where there is something for everyone. You like jam? Phish – for two nights, by the way. Rock/hip hop? Beastie Boys is your band. Industrial, instrumental brain-warp? Go see Nine Inch Nails. And finally, for those of you who are old school, Bruce is your man.

The Worst Thing About Bonnaroo: From what I’ve heard, ticket prices. Not exactly your cheapest option.

The Best Thing About Bonnaroo: Variety. Oh so much variety.

2. Warped Tour

I know, I know, I know… Cliched as hell. And sadly, another one I’ve never gotten a chance to go to. But I feel like it’s one of those festivals that every person in our generation who listens to punk/alternative/rock/ska/etc. (myself pathetically excluded) has attended. A “coming of age” concert festival, if you will–it’s the festival that our generation has grown up with. No Doubt, Deftones and Sublime played the first one in 1995 (that one goes on the Time Machine List for sure). Anti-Flag, Bad Religion, Bayside, and NOFX played this year.

The Worst Thing About Warped Tour: Rumor has it that it’s not what it used to be. Which is most likely true, but that could be said about most things – everything changes and evolves.

The Best Thing About Warped Tour: Ticket prices are badass.

3. moe. down

Jamfest to the extreme. Another I haven’t been to (I should change this list to “Top Music Fests I Would Give my Right Arm to Attend”). My father and brother, however, have gone for the past eight years. They consider moe. down to be their New Year, if that’s any indication of the level of kick-ass-ness of this festival. The headliner is obviously moe. Other artists that have made an appearance over the years: Matisyahu, Cake, the Flaming Lips, Blues Traveler and Mike Gordon of Phish.

The Worst Thing About moe. down: The camping grounds are a mess. The bathrooms are the height of unpleasantness. Hygiene is obviously not the number one priority.

The Best Thing About moe. down: Easy going, hippie atmosphere.

4. South by Southwest

Surprise, another I haven’t been to (legit excuse this time, traveling to Texas is a pain in the ass). This one is more of an arts-fest, a mix of music and movies. This past year, Metallica, Devo, Ace Enders and Kanye West played. Movies screened include The Hurt Locker, I Love You, Man and Adventureland. Think Sundance meets a music festival.

The Worst Thing About South by Southwest: The distance, and I would imagine ticket prices are outrageous.

The Best Thing About South by Southwest: I’m a music and movies addict; this would be my heaven.

5. The Bamboozle

ONE I’VE ACTUALLY BEEN TO! And it was by far the very best weekend of my life. I brought my best friend, we stayed about 20 minutes away from the venue (which is NJ b-t-dubs, good location), and we proceeded to have an amazing time. The bands? So great. The headliners were Fall Out Boy and No Doubt (No Doubt’s reunion show!) Other bands included Ace Enders and a Million Different People, Rise Against, Forgive Durden, Asher Roth, The Get Up Kids and Hollywood Undead.

The Worst Thing About The Bamboozle: The weather royally sucked on day 2.

The Best Thing About The Bamboozle: This one is biased – it was the best weekend of my life. It was the ideal weekend, I had great music, great food, tons of free merch, and was surrounded by people who love music as much as myself. So grab your best friend and head to Jersey next May!
