Entre Mis Pasos

All I could think about Friday night was, “Daaaang, yo I wish I could move my hips like that!”

Enviously staring up to the Goldstein stage, this phrase was running through my head because last Friday I attended the Raices Dance Concert.

The Raices Dance Troupe is the only Latino Dance Troupe at Syracuse University. But wow, those Raices dancers really knew how to move. From salsa to lyrical to hip-hop dancing, they were not afraid to flaunt everything they had.

Honestly, I don’t think I have ever seen such a passionate dance show. At one point, one of the male dancers slammed his entire body onto the stage so intensely in a closing move that I was legitimately concerned he had broken his arm.

The show was titled “Entre Mis Pasos,” which translates to mean “Among my Steps.” The focus of “Entre Mis Pasos” was to portray the daily struggles of the Latino community, and especially the struggle of maintaining identity while acclimating to the American way. Each dance number was based on a specific topic ranging from “Immigration” to “Love” to “Unity.”

Intertwined among these ten dance numbers were poetry readings (“slam” included) and video clips that further highlighted these daily struggles.

The audience was also quite a spectacle. Their appreciation for the show was extremely palpable as loud cheering was constantly buzzing throughout the auditorium. Some were even dancing along in their seats.

But as boisterous as this audience truly was, I was disappointed it was so small. Sure, they held their own, but I was hoping to see more support for Raices. Raices is such a unique group on the Syracuse campus and like all groups, they need support. These dancers have been working their butts off since the beginning of this year and it really showed. Next year, I hope to see you there because I will most definitely be, envy and all.
