Will we let it get this far?

With the weather getting warmer, I honestly can’t stop thinking about global warming. It’s a serious crisis that has already taken a devastating toll on our world, but things can be salvaged if people force their government to enforce relevant, necessary reform. That is where we come in. We need to get our governmental leaders to realize the importance of the issues that we care about.
First on the list: habitat destruction. Right now there are several threatened habitats and species that are on the brink of extinction. Rainforests are perhaps the best known of these threatened places. People are beginning to learn about the vanishing rainforests, but not many are actually helping to stop the destruction. Rainforests are referred to as “the lungs of the planet” because they are the largest assembly of trees that filters out the carbon emissions from the air.

They might also be called “the pharmacy of the planet” for they possess bountiful natural chemicals that are the recipes for many of today’s prescription drugs. When humans become the barricades on the very road that they are attempting to pave, will we then realize what we have lost? According to Dr. Bjerklie, a scientist who specializes in rainforest health, “…hundreds, even thousands, of potential miracle drugs may never be identified owing to the plundering of the rain forests.”
Rainforests are not alone in climate change’s line of fire. Deserts, the poles, coral reefs, permafrost, Edith’s Checkerspot Butterfly, African Elephant, King Protea, Wild Salmon, Prickly Pear Cactus, Harlequin Frog, Adelie Penguins, to name a few, are on the chopping block. This is just the beginning.
