Monkey See, Monkey Do

It seems as though, as a nation, when we take one step forward, we follow it by taking two steps backwards.  On January 20th, we made history when we inaugurated the first African American president into office.  The election of Barack Obama marked a change in the right direction for the United States where race took a backseat to the betterment of this nation.  Fast-forward to less than one month later, and now we are mired in another cloud of racism all thanks to a cartoon published by the New York Post.

The now infamous New York Post cartoon depicts a dead chimpanzee shot numerous times, a reference to the incident in Stamford, Connecticut where cops shot a chimp that attacked a woman.  Where this comic goes wrong is in the quote by one the cops at the shooting, in which he states “Now they’ll have to find someone else to write the stimulus bill.”  To portray President Obama as a dead chimp is clearly just another low-class, ignorant, racist attempt by the right-wing media to find humor at the expense of Obama’s race or religion.

Even more upsetting is the fact that the Post is backing their cartoonist, and stating that the illustration “broadly mocks Washington’s efforts to revive the economy.” However, knowing cartoonist Sean Delonas’ track record, it should come as no surprise that the man relishes in the controversy he conjures up.  His previous cartoons have attacked former Senator James McGreevey for coming out, other offensive stances on homosexuality, and painting women as overly promiscuous.  With no apology from the Post, it seems as though the newspaper not only excuse Mr. Delonas, but worse of all, they accept his actions.  Similar to the New Yorker cartoon, Obama will absolve him of any wrongdoing, and therein be the better man.  Yet, while this may seem like just a cartoon, it demonstrates the underlying racism that we may never be able to rid ourselves of.

Excellent post. I was shocked when I saw this on CNN.

Rupert Murdoch makes another glorious contribution to journalism.

  2. stophate says:

Billionaire Rupert Murdoch, the owner of Fox News also owns the New York Post. Murdoch hates anything to do with Democrats so I’m sure he fully supports if not knew about the Obama chimp cartoon. I will be boycotting the New York Post and all of its advertisers. Inciting racism and hatred like this goes beyond free speech. Whoever is responsible for the cartoon and its publishing should be arrested and charged with a hate crime and threatening the President with violence. This is the worst case of main steam racism I am aware of in the past 20 years.
