Jason Schwartzman, Actor. Musician?

Actor Jason Schwartzman (Rushmore, The Darjeeling Limited, I Heart Huckabees) makes music too. And what sweet, sweet music it is.

He records under the moniker “Coconut Records.” Schwartzman just released his new album, Davy, the follow-up to 2007’s Nighttiming. This isn’t some half-assed attempt by an actor to earn indie-cred. Schwartzman has some serious talent. He was, after all, the drummer for Phantom Planet. Don’t laugh, music elitists.

Coconut Records seems to be Schwartzman’s ode to sunny beach-pop. His first two albums are perfect hand-clapping sing-a-longs. The unfortunate fact: no one freakin’ knows Coconut Records exists!

They should. These are some of the most fun tunes around. I’ve been trying to spread the word by including Coconut Records on some of my friends’ mix CDs but Schwartzman deserves more attention than that.

Even though I think both Davy and Nighttiming are full of great little diddies, I’ll throw out some song recommendations to get you started.

From Davy, “Any Fun,” “The Summer,” and “Saint Jerome” are sure to make the winter a little warmer. Nighttiming‘s musts are “West Coast,” “It’s Not You It’s Me,” and the title track.

I guarantee the sugary sounds of Coconut Records will make you and your eardrums quite happy.

Now, go make Mr. Schwartzman happy and cop some of his jams.

    NICE! I’m a new fan.

super chill. good walking-around-campus-while-drunk-out-of-my-skull music. especially with the eerie chorus in the background

  3. Coconut Records is probably my favorite new music discovery. And Bored to Death my favorite new TV show. It’s nice to see multi-talented people doing what they are great at.
