AM’s at Alto

If you’ve spent a significant amount of time in Syracuse, say, more than six months or so, you’ve probably been to Alto Cinco. Tucked in between the old/new Westcott Theater and Munjed’s Middle Eastern café, Alto Cinco is a too-small but sweet and almost-authentic Mexican eatery. By the time you leave Syracuse, you’ll probably have eaten there at least fifteen times. If you can get a table, that is.

Last spring, just days after discovering that they also did Sunday brunch, I hoofed it down there after a night on the town. Conveniently, they don’t start delivering the goods until 11, so there’s no need to be the early bird. As it turned out, their morning fare stood up to what I’d come to know and love.

It doesn’t seem like quite the deal that it does for dinner, when you pay eight bucks for breakfast. Especially when you can walk out of many local diners only $3.50 poorer. But if you want one of the fresh, healthy, and monstrous meals that our dear Alto is so known for ’round the Westcott block, you won’t be disappointed.

First off, if I had known about the complimentary breakfast appetizer that my breakfast burrito came with, I probably wouldn’t have ordered it. As my three sleepy-eyed companions and I sipped our coffees and waited to see how Alto would handle the most important meal of the day, a little surprise arrived: fresh, in-house baked, still warm blueberry crumb coffee cake.

We all died and went immediately to heaven, where we proceeded to shake our maracas until at least 2 pm. It might not be authentic Mexican, but that cake? That cake is still with me. Unfortunately, the breakfast burrito was less memorable, filled with luke-warm eggs and too-cold vegetable ingredients. But it wasn’t bad, and for that coffee cake, I’d order just about anything for breakfast shy of haggis.

And with Alto Cinco around for lazy Sunday mornings, that doesn’t look like it needs to happen anytime soon.
