It’s one of the most beloved romances of the 1990’s (and let’s face it, that decade had a lot of good ones), despite the fact that two love interests spend less than five minutes of screen time together. But that’s what makes Sleepless in Seattle. And with every classic movie, a few (or more like almost 20) years go by, and people suddenly realize that this story would be SO much better if you just add music to it. That’s what got us Legally Blonde, isn’t it?
The Sleepless in Seattle musical is planned to premiere at the Pasadena Playhouse in Pasadena, California. Originally, the Playhouse was looking at a June/July 2012 premiere date, but that date has recently been pushed back due to some serious revamps that will be made on the show.
“Developing a new musical is very intricate, and developing a show based on a movie as iconic as ‘Sleepless in Seattle’ is something we don’t take lightly,” said producer David Shor. “I feel that it is essential not to rush this progression so that the show that is ultimately seen on stage is something we all can be proud of.”
The biggest of these changes is the hiring of a new songwriting team. No composers/lyricists have been hired for the job yet. The book for the musical was penned by one of the screenplay’s original writers, Jeff Arch. Hopefully with Arch’s book and guidance, the new songwriting team can keep the essence of this memorable movie on stage.
